Sirenia is a Norwegian gothic and symphonic metal band from Stavanger. The project was founded in January 2001. At its core stands Morten Veland. He is the band’s guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and producer. Veland is also known as a former member of Tristania.
After leaving that band, he created Sirenia as a fully author-driven project. From the beginning, the artistic vision was clear. The focus was on dark, melancholic and atmospheric metal. Emotion and mood were always central elements of the sound.
The band’s musical identity is built on contrast. Heavy guitars are combined with rich orchestration. Choirs and female vocals interact with harsher male parts. Electronic elements appear occasionally. The original project name was Masters of Sirenia. It was inspired by sirens from Greek mythology. This influence shaped both the lyrics and the overall atmosphere.
The debut album At Sixes and Sevens was released in 2002. It introduced a layered and heavily orchestrated gothic metal sound. Today, it is considered a key release within the genre. The album laid the foundation for Sirenia’s signature style.
The follow-up An Elixir for Existence arrived in 2004. It further strengthened the band’s identity. Emotional depth and dark atmosphere became even more pronounced. At this point, Sirenia’s artistic direction was firmly established.
Over the years, the band became known for changes in female vocalists. Notable voices include Henriette Bordvik, Monika Pedersen, and Ailyn. Each brought a different character and dynamic. This constant evolution added new shades to the band’s sound. The album Nine Destinies and a Downfall from 2007 marked a more melodic and accessible approach. Later releases continued to balance symphonic grandeur with modern metal influences.
In the band’s more recent phase, Emmanuelle Zoldan took over the role of lead vocalist. With her, Sirenia released several well-received albums. The core sound remained intact. At the same time, it gained a renewed sense of freshness.
Her voice is powerful and expressive. It fits naturally into Veland’s compositional vision. The dark atmosphere remains central. Emotion and introspection continue to define the music.
Lyrically, Sirenia focuses on inner themes. Existential sorrow is a recurring subject. Inner conflict, depression and spiritual searching are also present. This depth is a key reason why the band resonates strongly within the genre.
Despite numerous lineup changes, Sirenia has maintained a strong identity. The reason lies in Morten Veland’s consistent artistic control. He remains the creative core of the project.
Today, Sirenia is regarded as one of the longest-standing and most influential names in gothic and symphonic metal. Their body of work blends darkness, emotion and orchestral scope. This combination keeps the band relevant and distinctive within the metal landscape.
Meteora is a symphonic metal band from Budapest formed in 2010. Their music blends elements of death, power and gothic metal enriched with lush orchestral arrangements.
One of the band’s defining features is the presence of three vocalists, which gives their songs a dynamic and layered sound. The combination of clean vocals, growls and symphonic sections creates an atmosphere that will appeal to fans of bands such as Epica, Therion and Nightwish.
Meteora combines powerful metal riffs with rich orchestral arrangements. Their songs often move between dark atmospheric passages and epic melodic sections.
This approach allows the band to create a sound that is both heavy and melodic. The balance between symphonic textures and metal intensity places Meteora firmly within the modern symphonic metal scene.
Over the years the band has released several recordings, and their latest album “Darkest Light” marks an important step in their musical evolution.
The album features strong orchestral arrangements, dynamic vocal performances and production that highlights the contrast between epic and darker elements of their sound.
Meteora has built a solid reputation on stage. During their career they have performed alongside bands such as Visions of Atlantis, Lord of the Lost, Tarja and Sirenia.
Their live shows are known for strong energy and impressive vocal performances, making them a compelling act for fans of symphonic metal.
