Rotting Christ Return to Croatia After Seven Years

Greek metal legends ROTTING CHRIST return to Croatia after seven long years! One of the most important and influential bands on the European black metal scene will perform at Boogaloo in Zagreb on Sunday, November 22, 2026.

Croatian fans last had the chance to see them in 2019 at Močvara, when they visited Zagreb on a joint tour with Moonspell. Seven years later, Rotting Christ are finally returning to Croatia, this time taking the stage at Boogaloo.

Early Bird tickets priced at €29 are available via the Hangtime website. Once the first allocation sells out, the price will increase to €33. Tickets at the door, if any remain, will cost €37. Information about physical tickets at Dirty Old Shop will be announced later.

From the Athens Underground to Stages Around the World

Rotting Christ were formed by brothers Sakis and Themis Tolis in Athens in 1987. Starting with death metal and grindcore roots, they soon moved towards a darker sound. This evolution would establish them as one of the pioneers of the Greek black metal scene.

Following the cult “Passage to Arcturo,” their debut album “Thy Mighty Contract” arrived in 1993 and laid the foundations for their distinctive sound. A year later came “Non Serviam,” whose title eventually became something of an artistic and personal motto for the band.

Over nearly four decades, Rotting Christ have grown from an underground phenomenon into one of the most internationally recognized names in Greek metal.

Black Metal Beyond Its Boundaries

Rotting Christ have never remained confined to a single genre. Over the years, they have incorporated elements of death, heavy and gothic metal into their sound. Ritual rhythms, choral passages and influences from Greek history and mythology later became increasingly important.

Albums such as “Triarchy of the Lost Lovers,” “A Dead Poem,” “Theogonia,” “Aealo,” “Rituals” and “The Heretics” represent different stages of this evolution.

“Theogonia,” released in 2007, was particularly important. The album opened a new chapter for the band and placed greater emphasis on Greek tradition, mythology and cultural heritage.

“Pro Xristou” – The Band’s Latest Chapter

Rotting Christ released their fourteenth studio album, “Pro Xristou,” in 2024. Its title means “Before Christ,” and the album is dedicated to the last pagan kings who resisted the spread of Christianity.

The album continues their distinctive combination of monumental riffs, melody and ritualistic atmosphere. Songs such as “The Apostate,” “Like Father, Like Son,” “The Farewell” and “Yggdrasil” show a band that refuses to simply live off its past, even after almost four decades.

Brothers Sakis Tolis on vocals and guitar and Themis Tolis on drums remain at the heart of the band. The current line-up is completed by Kostas “Spades” Heliotis on bass and Kostis Foukarakis on guitar.

Zagreb and Belgrade in Two Days

The Zagreb concert will be the second of two consecutive Rotting Christ shows organized by Hangtime.

One day earlier, on November 21, the band will perform at Zappa Barka in Belgrade. The following night, they return to Croatia for their long-awaited Zagreb show at Boogaloo.

Two nights, two cities and one of the most important bands to emerge from the Greek metal scene.

Who Are Rotting Christ?

Rotting Christ were formed by brothers Sakis and Themis Tolis in Athens in 1987. The band began with roots in death metal and grindcore but soon moved towards a darker sound. In doing so, they became one of the key forces behind the distinctive Greek black metal scene.

Following the cult mini-LP “Passage to Arcturo,” their debut album “Thy Mighty Contract” was released in 1993. Just one year later came “Non Serviam,” one of the defining albums of their early career. Its title eventually became something of an artistic and personal motto for the band.

From Black Metal to a Sound of Their Own

During the 1990s, Rotting Christ refused to remain within the boundaries of black metal. The band gradually introduced elements of death, heavy and gothic metal while retaining their characteristic dark atmosphere.

Albums such as “Triarchy of the Lost Lovers,” “A Dead Poem,” “Khronos” and “Sanctus Diavolos” marked different stages of this evolution. Rotting Christ gradually developed a sound that became almost impossible to mistake for any other band.

At the same time, they grew from underground heroes into one of the most internationally recognized names in Greek metal.

“Theogonia” and a Return to Greek Roots

A major new chapter began with “Theogonia” in 2007. Rotting Christ increasingly incorporated elements connected to Greek history, mythology and cultural heritage into their music.

They developed this approach further on “Aealo,” “Κατά τον δαίμονα εαυτού” and “Rituals.” Extreme metal became intertwined with ritual rhythms, choral passages and motifs inspired by various ancient cultures.

The result was a more monumental and deeply atmospheric sound. It has since become one of the defining characteristics of modern Rotting Christ.

More Than Three Decades Without Stopping

The 2019 album “The Heretics” once again showed that Rotting Christ had no intention of simply living off their past. The band continued exploring religion, history, philosophy and conflicts between different worldviews.

Throughout their career, Rotting Christ have toured virtually the entire world and played more than a thousand shows. Their influence has long since extended beyond the Greek metal scene.

Today, they are regarded as one of the key bands of Hellenic black metal and one of Greece’s most internationally successful metal acts.
