I Am Morbid is an American death metal band formed in 2016 by David Vincent, former vocalist and bassist of Morbid Angel. The band was created to bring music from Morbid Angel’s most influential era back to the stage.
Unlike traditional tribute bands, I Am Morbid is led by a musician who helped shape death metal history. Their repertoire focuses on four legendary Morbid Angel albums: “Altars of Madness”, “Blessed Are the Sick”, “Covenant”, and “Domination”.
The band’s name comes from the song “I Am Morbid”, featured on Morbid Angel’s 2011 album Illud Divinum Insanus.
David Vincent – One of Death Metal’s Most Recognizable Voices
David Vincent joined Morbid Angel in the mid-1980s. He soon became one of the leading figures of the Florida death metal scene.
His deep vocals, distinctive bass playing, and commanding stage presence helped define the band’s sound.
Alongside guitarist Trey Azagthoth and drummer Pete Sandoval, Vincent recorded four groundbreaking albums. These releases established new standards for extreme metal.
Vincent left Morbid Angel in 1996 but later returned. He remained with the band until 2015.
By forming I Am Morbid, he continued performing the music that defined his most celebrated years.
“Altars of Madness” and “Blessed Are the Sick” – The Foundations of Florida Death Metal
Morbid Angel released their debut album, “Altars of Madness”, in 1989. It remains one of the most influential death metal records ever made.
Songs such as “Immortal Rites”, “Maze of Torment”, and “Chapel of Ghouls” introduced a distinctive sound. Extreme speed, technical guitar work, and dark atmospheres became its defining features.
The follow-up, “Blessed Are the Sick” (1991), explored a more complex and atmospheric direction. It also incorporated stronger influences from classical music.
Tracks such as “Fall from Grace”, “Day of Suffering”, and “Brainstorm” strengthened the band’s reputation.
Both albums had a lasting impact on death metal throughout the 1990s.
“Covenant” and “Domination” – International Breakthrough
Morbid Angel’s third album, “Covenant” (1993), marked a major international breakthrough.
Released through Giant Records, it featured classics such as “Rapture”, “Pain Divine”, and “God of Emptiness”. The music video for “God of Emptiness” also received airplay on MTV.
The band’s next album, “Domination” (1995), closed their first major era with David Vincent.
Songs such as “Where the Slime Live”, “Dominate”, and “Dawn of the Angry” introduced a heavier rhythmic approach. The band’s trademark technical complexity remained intact.
Together, these four albums represent a defining chapter in death metal history.
I Am Morbid – Bringing the Classics Back to the Stage
I Am Morbid played their first concerts in 2017. The band later toured internationally and appeared at major metal festivals.
Their performances focused on material from Vincent’s years with Morbid Angel.
A major milestone was the reunion of Vincent and drummer Pete Sandoval. Sandoval’s extraordinary speed and precision had helped shape extreme metal drumming.
However, Sandoval announced his departure from I Am Morbid in September 2026. He also confirmed that he would not join the autumn European Morbidfest tour.
Daniel Rutkowski was announced as his replacement for the tour.
“ABCD Classics” – Four Albums That Defined Death Metal
For the European Morbidfest 2026 tour, I Am Morbid prepared a special “ABCD Classics” set.
The programme celebrates four essential Morbid Angel albums:
A – “Altars of Madness” (1989)
B – “Blessed Are the Sick” (1991)
C – “Covenant” (1993)
D – “Domination” (1995)
These albums helped define the sound and technical standards of Florida death metal.
The set explores different stages of the band’s evolution. It moves from the raw brutality of early releases to the heavier, more complex sound of later albums.
At Morbidfest, I Am Morbid will perform alongside Atheist and Cancer. Both bands played important roles in the development of death metal.
I Am Morbid Live
I Am Morbid’s concerts capture the intensity of classic Florida death metal.
Vincent’s unmistakable vocals connect today’s performances with the original recordings. Technical guitar riffs, rapid drumming, and frequent tempo changes preserve the songs’ distinctive character.
The band attracts several generations of extreme metal fans.
Some grew up with these legendary albums. Others are discovering the music live for the first time.

Atheist is an American metal band formed in Florida in 1984. Led by founder, vocalist, and guitarist Kelly Shaefer, the band became one of the pioneers of technical and progressive death metal.
From the beginning, their music pushed beyond the boundaries of traditional extreme metal. They combined the brutality of Florida’s death metal scene with jazz, progressive rock, and complex instrumental arrangements.
Unusual time signatures, sudden tempo changes, and virtuosic musicianship became the band’s trademarks. Atheist helped pave the way for a new generation of technically ambitious extreme metal bands.
“Piece of Time” – The Beginning of a Progressive Revolution
Atheist recorded their debut album, “Piece of Time”, in 1988. It was released in 1989 and immediately demonstrated the band’s unconventional approach to death metal.
Songs such as “Piece of Time”, “Unholy War”, and “Room with a View” combined aggressive riffs with unpredictable rhythms and demanding instrumental passages.
Bassist Roger Patterson played a particularly important role in shaping the band’s sound. His technical precision and creativity became essential elements of Atheist’s musical identity.
Although the album achieved limited commercial success upon release, it later gained cult status among technical death metal fans.
“Unquestionable Presence” – The Album That Redefined Death Metal
The band’s second album, “Unquestionable Presence”, was released in 1991. Today, it is widely regarded as one of the most important albums in technical death metal history.
Atheist further developed their combination of extreme metal, jazz, and progressive rock. Complex rhythmic structures, unusual harmonies, and frequent tempo changes became even more prominent.
Songs such as “Mother Man”, “Unquestionable Presence”, “Your Life’s Retribution”, and “An Incarnation’s Dream” demonstrated the band’s extraordinary musical ambition.
The album was created under tragic circumstances. Bassist Roger Patterson died in a car accident in 1991, before the album was recorded.
Patterson had already written most of the bass parts. They were performed in the studio by Tony Choy, also known for his work with Cynic and Pestilence.
Unquestionable Presence is now considered a cornerstone of technical death metal. Its influence can be heard in numerous progressive and extreme metal bands that followed.
“Elements” – Jazz and Progressive Metal Take Center Stage
Atheist released their third album, “Elements”, in 1993. It marked an even greater departure from traditional death metal.
Jazz, fusion, Latin rhythms, and progressive rock became increasingly important elements of the band’s sound. Songs such as “Air”, “Mineral”, and “Elements” highlighted their willingness to experiment.
The album expanded Atheist’s musical boundaries even further. However, it also marked the end of the band’s first active period. Atheist disbanded in 1993.
Over the following years, their first three albums gradually achieved classic status within technical and progressive death metal.
Reunion and “Jupiter”
Atheist reunited in 2006 after more than a decade away from the live music scene.
Their return allowed a new generation of metal fans to experience material from their legendary albums in concert.
In 2010, they released “Jupiter”, their first studio album in seventeen years. The record maintained their trademark technical complexity, aggression, and progressive approach.
Although Atheist have not released another studio album since Jupiter, they have continued performing periodically. Their live shows keep the legacy of their classic discography alive.
Atheist Live – “Unquestionable Presence”
“Unquestionable Presence” remains a central part of Atheist’s current live performances. The album played a defining role in both the band’s career and the development of technical death metal.
Its complex compositions demand exceptional instrumental precision. Sudden transitions between aggressive death metal passages, jazz rhythms, and progressive structures become particularly impressive on stage.
Atheist left a lasting mark on bands that continued exploring the boundaries of extreme metal. Their music remains an important link between death metal, progressive rock, and jazz.

Cancer is a British death metal band formed in 1988 in Ironbridge, England. The band was founded by guitarist and vocalist John Walker, drummer Carl Stokes, and bassist Ian Buchanan.
With their earliest releases, Cancer established themselves as one of the leading bands of the early British death metal scene. Their music combined the brutality of death metal with the direct aggression of thrash and a distinctly dark atmosphere.
Unlike more technically oriented bands, Cancer focused on powerful riffs, tight rhythms, and raw energy. This approach became their trademark and earned them cult status among old-school death metal fans.
“To the Gory End” – The Beginning of British Death Metal
Cancer released their debut album, “To the Gory End”, in 1990. It introduced the band to a wider metal audience.
Songs such as “Blood Bath”, “C.F.C.”, and the title track “To the Gory End” delivered an uncompromising blend of death and thrash metal. Fast riffs, aggressive vocals, and straightforward song structures defined their early sound.
The album emerged during a period of rapid development for the European death metal scene. Cancer stood out as one of the genre’s most recognizable British representatives.
To the Gory End is now considered a classic of early British death metal.
“Death Shall Rise” – The Album That Defined Their Career
Cancer’s second album, “Death Shall Rise”, was released in 1991. It remains the band’s best-known release.
The album was recorded at the legendary Morrisound Recording studio in Florida. Production was handled by Scott Burns, who worked with many leading American death metal bands during that period.
Guitarist James Murphy joined the band for the album. He was already known for his work with Death and Obituary and later played with Testament. His guitar contributions added another dimension to Cancer’s sound.
Another notable feature was a guest appearance by Glen Benton, frontman of Deicide, on “Hung, Drawn and Quartered”.
Songs such as “Hung, Drawn and Quartered”, “Tasteless Incest”, and the title track “Death Shall Rise” showcased a heavier and more mature sound.
The album strengthened Cancer’s international reputation and became a landmark release in European old-school death metal.
“The Sins of Mankind” and Changes in Musical Direction
Cancer released their third album, “The Sins of Mankind”, in 1993. The band continued developing its distinctive death metal sound, introducing more elaborate arrangements and production.
Their next album, “Black Faith” (1995), marked a departure from their original death metal formula. It featured stronger influences from groove metal and alternative metal.
This change in direction received a more mixed response than their earlier releases. The band disbanded shortly afterwards, bringing its first active period to an end.
Nevertheless, Cancer’s first three albums continued to attract fans of classic death metal.
Reunion and New Albums
Cancer reunited several times over the following decades. These comebacks included concerts, festival appearances, and new studio recordings.
In 2005, they released “Spirit in Flames”, an album that continued exploring their musical identity.
Following another period of inactivity, the band returned with “Shadow Gripped” in 2018. The album marked a return to the aggressive death metal sound and atmosphere of their early releases.
In 2025, Cancer released “Inverted World”, adding another chapter to their discography.
Cancer Live – The Legacy of “Death Shall Rise”
Cancer’s live performances are built around the raw energy and direct aggression of classic death metal. Their sound features heavy guitar riffs, aggressive vocals, and a powerful rhythm section.
Songs from “Death Shall Rise” hold a particularly important place in their live repertoire. The album remains the most recognizable part of their discography.
Cancer belongs to the generation of bands that shaped the European death metal scene during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Their influence continues to resonate with fans of traditional, uncompromising extreme metal.
