“Rathlin From a Distance / The Liquid Hour”
Tiersen’s latest project unites two contrasting yet interconnected musical worlds.
Rathlin From a Distance is a collection of contemplative piano pieces inspired by solo sailing routes and quiet moments at sea. The music explores introspection, vulnerability and inner clarity.
The Liquid Hour, by contrast, embraces a more forceful electronic and psychedelic energy. These tracks were created after a powerful moment at the helm of Tiersen’s sailboat, with the lights of Belfast glowing in the distance. The music carries tension, resistance and hope, reflecting broader social and environmental questions.
Together, the two albums form a deeply personal and dynamic body of work.
Why You Should Not Miss Yann Tiersen in Zagreb

With Alice Boyd setting the tone and Tiersen guiding the night forward, 4 March at Tvornica Kulture promises a rare and immersive musical experience.

French composer Yann Tiersen became globally recognised through his music for Amélie and Good Bye Lenin. His style blends classical music, French chanson, minimalism and experimental electronic elements. Tiersen composes on piano, violin, accordion and specially prepared guitar, creating intimate and emotional soundscapes.
Although widely known for film music, Tiersen emphasizes that his artistic identity is much broader. His body of work includes solo albums, experimental collaborations, improvisational projects and sound explorations that push beyond the expectations of mainstream composition.
Yann Tiersen and his climate-focused artistic journey
In response to the climate crisis, Yann Tiersen has radically reshaped the way a modern musician can tour. He travelled across Europe on a slow, solitary winter tour — from Brest to Tallinn — driving under 100 km/h, without a touring crew, accompanied only by his dog. He rejected hotel stays, riders and excessive consumption, often sleeping in gardens, small ports or makeshift shelters.
He also travelled by sailboat Ninnog, navigating around Ireland, the Faroe Islands, Scotland, Shetland, Wales and Cornwall. In summer 2025, he adds the Arctic to his route. Through these journeys he brings his music into remote, intimate spaces, building genuine connections with local communities and breaking away from traditional touring models.
Rathlin from a Distance – introspective piano landscapes
The album Rathlin from a Distance features eight piano pieces inspired by places visited during his voyages. Tiersen describes the sea as a space that “strips away layers of identity”, revealing a person’s raw core.
Each composition acts as a meditative map — a return to one’s inner self, free from external expectations. The music is quiet, vulnerable and deeply reflective.
The Liquid Hour – electronic urgency and emotional resistance
The second part of the project, The Liquid Hour, brings a powerful mix of electronic textures and psychedelic rhythms. The inspiration came while steering his sailboat, watching the lights of Belfast shimmer in the distance. The result is a set of tracks driven by anger, energy and hope.
These five compositions serve as a “soundtrack of uprising” — a reaction against systems that restrict creativity, solidarity and personal freedom. The music invites listeners to unite, act and rebuild.
Conclusion
Yann Tiersen today stands not only as a celebrated composer, but as a sailor, environmentalist and artistic innovator. His work bridges nature, sound and social responsibility while preserving the emotional depth that made his most famous compositions so beloved.
Alice Boyd is a singer-songwriter, sound artist and audio producer based in South London. Her work explores the relationship between people and the natural world. Listening plays a central role in her creative practice. She approaches sound as a way of reconnecting with place and environment.
Her music sits at the intersection of folk-inspired harmonies, ambient electronics and field recordings. The result is a series of intimate and atmospheric soundscapes. These works function not only as songs, but as experiences. They invite the listener to slow down and reconnect with the idea of home and belonging.
Field recording and soundscapes
Field recording is a key element of Alice Boyd’s work. She travels across the United Kingdom, recording sounds from different locations, seasons and ecosystems. These recordings form the foundation of her compositions and installations.
Following an Artist in Residence programme at the Eden Project, Alice and her band performed in botanical gardens, on mountain slopes and in ancient forests. They also appeared in music venues across the UK. Through these performances, she blurs the line between traditional concerts and site-specific sound installations.
Radio, podcasts and public speaking
Alice Boyd is also active in radio and podcast formats. She hosts the monthly podcast Ffern – As the Season Turns. She has appeared as a guest host on BBC Countryfile Magazine – The Plodcast. She has also delivered a TEDx talk focused on listening as a tool for changing perception and our relationship with the environment.
For the Shifting Soundscapes project on BBC Radio 4, Alice followed in the footsteps of legendary field recordist Martyn Stewart. The project documents changes in environmental soundscapes and highlights the importance of attentive listening.
Artistic work and collaborations
Alice Boyd’s music and sound work has been featured on BBC Radio 3, 4 and 6. It has also been presented in venues such as Kings Place, the Barbican Conservatory and the Rainforest Biome at the Eden Project. Alongside her own releases, she creates soundscapes for radio, film, podcasts and installations.
She has collaborated with organisations including the BBC, RSPB, Ffern, Kew’s Wakehurst and EarthPercent. Her work consistently connects sound, ecology and listening as an artistic and environmental practice.
