More Than Three Decades at the Forefront of Black Metal
Since their formation in 1990, MARDUK have become synonymous with uncompromising black metal. Albums such as “Panzer Division Marduk,” “Heaven Shall Burn… When We Are Gathered,” “Opus Nocturne,” “Wormwood” and “Frontschwein” cemented their status as one of the most important bands in the history of the genre.
Their distinctive combination of extreme speed, raw aggression and dark atmosphere has been one of the benchmarks of the European black metal scene for decades.
Morgan, Mortuus and Bloodhammer
The driving force behind the band from the very beginning has been guitarist and founder Morgan “Evil” Steinmeyer Håkansson, the only constant member throughout MARDUK’s history.
The current line-up also features vocalist Mortuus (Daniel Rostén), known as the founder of the cult band Funeral Mist, and drummer Bloodhammer. His relentless precision has become a defining feature of the band’s live sound.
DEFIANT – More Than Two Decades of Extreme Metal
The evening will be opened by DEFIANT, a blackened death metal band formed in Požega in 2005. Their early sound was rooted in melodic death metal. Later releases introduced stronger black metal elements and a darker, more aggressive approach.
The band have released five studio albums, with “Mammon Mantra” representing the latest chapter in their career. Released in 2025, the album features Tony “Demolition Man” Dolan of Venom Inc. and Atomkraft as a guest on “Lord of the Opening.”
The current live line-up features Kris on guitar, T.K. on vocals, Julijana on bass and Dominik Blagec on drums. Their blend of death and black metal will provide a fitting warm-up for what follows.
Two Hangtime Shows in Three Days
MARDUK will play two Hangtime-organized shows as part of this short regional run. First, they will perform alongside MAYHEM at Zappa Barka in Belgrade on October 3. Just three days later, they will headline their Zagreb show with DEFIANT.
For decades, MARDUK have been regarded as one of the most brutal live acts on the extreme metal scene. Their performances leave little room to catch your breath. From the first song to the last, expect relentless speed, raw energy and the intensity for which the band have become known.

Marduk is a Swedish black metal band formed in 1990 in Norrköping.
For more than three decades, the band has remained one of the most influential names in black metal. Their music combines relentless black metal aggression with elements of death metal and occasional melodic passages.
The band’s name comes from the ancient Babylonian deity Marduk, reflecting its dark artistic identity from the very beginning.
An uncompromising sound
The driving force behind Marduk has always been guitarist Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson, better known as Evil.
His original goal was simple: to create one of the most blasphemous and uncompromising black metal bands ever formed.
Throughout their career, Marduk has released 15 studio albums, including several genre-defining records:
Panzer Division Marduk
Heaven Shall Burn… When We Are Gathered
Nightwing
Frontschwein
Memento Mori
Among them, “Panzer Division Marduk” stands out as one of the fastest and most aggressive albums ever recorded in black metal.
A cornerstone of black metal
Over the years, Marduk has performed around the world and built a reputation as one of the most intense live bands in extreme metal.
Their concerts are known for relentless speed, precision and uncompromising performances that remain true to the roots of Scandinavian black metal.
The band’s influence can be heard in countless black metal acts that emerged in the decades that followed.
Marduk today
The current lineup includes:
Morgan “Evil” Steinmeyer Håkansson – guitar
Mortuus (Daniel Rostén) – vocals
Bloodhammer – drums
Mortuus is also the founder of the acclaimed black metal project Funeral Mist, adding another respected name to the band’s legacy.
More than thirty years after its formation, Marduk continues to stand among the most important and influential bands in the history of black metal.
Defiant are a Croatian death/black metal band formed in Požega in 2005. During their early years, their sound was rooted in melodic death metal. Later releases introduced stronger black metal elements and a darker, more aggressive approach.
The band have gone through several line-up changes and different periods throughout their career. Nevertheless, they continued developing their distinctive combination of death and black metal. Today, they describe their sound as blackened death metal. Their music has been compared to bands such as Behemoth, Vader, Hate and Decapitated.
From Melodic Death Metal to Blackened Death Metal
Defiant’s first two albums were primarily focused on melodic death metal. “Morbid Spiritual Illness” from 2015 marked an important turning point in the band’s development. This release saw their darker and more aggressive sound begin to take shape.
They continued in this direction with “Insurrection Icon” in 2018. It was their first album featuring current vocalist T.K. The “Vanguards of Misrule” EP followed in 2022.
More Than Two Decades of Extreme Metal
Since their formation in 2005, Defiant have travelled a long road through the Croatian underground and extreme metal scene. The band have released five studio albums, alongside additional EP and split releases.
Their discography shows a gradual transition from more melodic beginnings towards their current blackened death metal sound. Death metal remains the foundation of their music, complemented by a strong black metal influence.
More than twenty years after their formation, Defiant continue to create music and perform live.
“Mammon Mantra” – Defiant’s Darkest Chapter
Their fifth studio album, “Mammon Mantra,” was released on May 17, 2025, through Satanath Records and InsArt Records. The band and labels describe it as their darkest and most ambitious release to date.
The album features twelve tracks that continue to combine death and black metal. Lyrically, it explores human greed, lust, corruption and moral decay. This brings it closer to a concept album than any previous Defiant release.
Tony “Demolition Man” Dolan of Venom Inc. and Atomkraft appears as a guest on “Lord of the Opening.” Polish vocalist Maksymina “Maxi” Kuzianik guests on “Ostara’s Eve.”
Defiant Today
The current live line-up features Kris on guitar and T.K. (Tomislav Kuternik) on vocals. Julijana plays bass, while Dominik Blagec is on drums.
This line-up took shape following changes on bass and drums during 2023.
With more than two decades behind them and five studio albums to their name, Defiant continue to develop their distinctive sound. Their latest album, Mammon Mantra, represents the newest chapter in their blend of death and black metal.
