The album paints a vision of a world caught between two extremes – one that struggles to exist yet fades into its own origins. With this release, the ensemble completes its trilogy exploring myth, identity, and transformation.
A multimedia live performance full of symbolism
The concert will feature new costumes, immersive video scenography, and original visuals. Alongside the orchestra’s core members, guest musicians from the album will join the performance – from electronic artists to traditional instrumentalists. “Medzotermina” is not just a musical project but a live audiovisual journey where theatre, concert, and performance art merge into one collective experience.
The album trilogy connecting myth and the modern world
The first part of the trilogy, “Divinities of the Earth and the Waters” (PDV Records, 2018), was inspired by Slavic mythology. The second, “Altur Mur” (Menart, 2022), imagined a feast on a fictional Mediterranean island. The third, “Medzotermina,” explores resource exploitation and the fragile bond between humans and nature. Although rooted in myth, the story mirrors the present day. Murtić explains: “We move through abandoned cities waiting for their carnival and follow children lost at sea who find the last green garden – a world that disappears as it consumes itself.” The album echoes the past in both music and language, featuring lyrics in four dialects: Čakavian, Štokavian, Veljot, and Proto-Indo-European.
Myth, music, and a message for our time
“The foundation of this abstract story,” says Murtić, “comes from an old European fairy tale, best known as Hansel and Gretel. The children face the idea of sacrifice and realise that the witch is their mother.” The message is clear: when society fails to protect its weakest, it collapses as a whole. The album was recorded live at the Small Hall of Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall in October 2024 and supported by the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media, Lisinski Concert Hall, Menart, and public crowdfunding via Indiegogo.

Conclusion – Mimika Orchestra live experience
Mimika Orchestra live at Kino SC will be a journey through myth, music, and reality. Expect a night of emotion, artistry, and collective catharsis. See you on November 20 at Kino SC – Mimika Orchestra brings myth back to life!
Mimika Orchestra was founded in London (UK) in 2010 by Croatian multi-instrumentalist and composer Mak Murtić and vocalist Maja Rivić. Today, they are based in Zagreb, and their music is recognized for original compositions blending contemporary jazz with the rich heritage of Balkan folk traditions. Specific Balkan modalities and rhythms are woven into progressive jazz structures, creating a distinctive sound.
Musical concept and themes
Each Mimika Orchestra project brings a new story and theme. Their music and stage performances are tied together by narratives highlighted with costumes and performance art. So far, they have presented audiences with a utopian society on Mars, a prehistoric migration from Africa into the world, and a pagan Slavic funeral ritual. In this way, the ensemble goes beyond music into the realm of conceptual art.
Social engagement and message
What makes Mimika Orchestra unique is their strong stance on social issues. Their works emphasize themes of social justice, collaboration, and unity, reflected both in their music and in stage presence. The atmosphere of their concerts resembles ancient tribal gatherings – creating a deep sense of community and connection among the audience.
Line-up and instruments
The ensemble gathers a large group of musicians from diverse backgrounds. Members include vocalists Maja Rivić, Anabela Barić, and Anamarija Žugić, flutist Nika Bauman, clarinetist Tomaž Zevnik, oboist Jelena Ilčić, saxophonists Marko Lucijan Hraščanec, Vojkan Jocić, and Marko Gudelj, trumpeters Branko Sterpin, Zvonimir Bajević, and Valdemar Kušan, trombonists Matija Mlakar and Miron Hauser, tubist Jurica Rukljić, alongside many others on guitar, bass, drums, percussion, and electronics. A special touch comes from traditional instruments like sopile and the Cres bagpipes.
Mimika Orchestra today
Today, Mimika Orchestra stands as one of the most progressive and unique ensembles on the regional jazz/world scene. Their concerts blur the lines between genres, tradition, and modernity – always aiming to connect people through art.
