The Greek metal legends finally return to Belgrade

Greek metal legends Rotting Christ finally return to Belgrade after more than 19 years! One of Europe’s most influential black metal bands will perform at Zappa Barka on November 21, 2026.

For almost four decades, Rotting Christ has built a career far beyond the genre that gave birth to the band. From the Athens underground to major international stages, they have become one of extreme metal’s most recognisable names.

Belgrade has waited more than 19 years for their return. On Saturday, November 21, that long wait finally comes to an end.

Almost four decades of Rotting Christ

Rotting Christ was formed in Greece in the late 1980s. Over the following decades, the band became a key name on the European extreme metal scene.

Their sound has constantly evolved throughout their career. Early black metal roots gradually merged with dark, gothic and ritualistic elements. This evolution created the distinctive identity that defines the band today.

During almost 40 years together, Rotting Christ has toured across the world. Their influence has long since expanded beyond the Greek and European black metal scenes.

Brothers Sakis Tolis on vocals and guitar and Themis Tolis on drums remain at the heart of the band. The current lineup also features Kostas “Spades” Heliotis and Kostis Foukarakis.

Rotting Christ live – a reputation built on stage

Much of Rotting Christ’s reputation has been built through relentless live performances. Decades of touring have made them one of extreme metal’s most reliable and intense live bands.

Their concerts combine heaviness, atmosphere and the ritualistic energy that has become their trademark. Rotting Christ can command both major festival stages and packed clubs.

The Belgrade concert offers a rare opportunity to experience them inside the intimate setting of Zappa Barka. After more than 19 years, this will be much more than another date on the tour.

ROTTING CHRIST – Pioneers of Greek Black Metal

Who Are Rotting Christ?

Rotting Christ were formed by brothers Sakis and Themis Tolis in Athens in 1987. The band began with roots in death metal and grindcore but soon moved towards a darker sound. In doing so, they became one of the key forces behind the distinctive Greek black metal scene.

Following the cult mini-LP “Passage to Arcturo,” their debut album “Thy Mighty Contract” was released in 1993. Just one year later came “Non Serviam,” one of the defining albums of their early career. Its title eventually became something of an artistic and personal motto for the band.

From Black Metal to a Sound of Their Own

During the 1990s, Rotting Christ refused to remain within the boundaries of black metal. The band gradually introduced elements of death, heavy and gothic metal while retaining their characteristic dark atmosphere.

Albums such as “Triarchy of the Lost Lovers,” “A Dead Poem,” “Khronos” and “Sanctus Diavolos” marked different stages of this evolution. Rotting Christ gradually developed a sound that became almost impossible to mistake for any other band.

At the same time, they grew from underground heroes into one of the most internationally recognized names in Greek metal.

“Theogonia” and a Return to Greek Roots

A major new chapter began with “Theogonia” in 2007. Rotting Christ increasingly incorporated elements connected to Greek history, mythology and cultural heritage into their music.

They developed this approach further on “Aealo,” “Κατά τον δαίμονα εαυτού” and “Rituals.” Extreme metal became intertwined with ritual rhythms, choral passages and motifs inspired by various ancient cultures.

The result was a more monumental and deeply atmospheric sound. It has since become one of the defining characteristics of modern Rotting Christ.

More Than Three Decades Without Stopping

The 2019 album “The Heretics” once again showed that Rotting Christ had no intention of simply living off their past. The band continued exploring religion, history, philosophy and conflicts between different worldviews.

Throughout their career, Rotting Christ have toured virtually the entire world and played more than a thousand shows. Their influence has long since extended beyond the Greek metal scene.

Today, they are regarded as one of the key bands of Hellenic black metal and one of Greece’s most internationally successful metal acts.

“Pro Xristou” – A New Chapter for Rotting Christ

Their fourteenth studio album, “Pro Xristou,” was released in 2024. Its title means “Before Christ,” and the album pays tribute to the last pagan kings who resisted the spread of Christianity.

Songs such as “The Apostate,” “Like Father, Like Son,” “The Farewell” and “Yggdrasil” continue the band’s distinctive combination of monumental riffs, melody and ritualistic atmosphere.

More than 35 years after their formation, Rotting Christ continue to develop their own sound without abandoning their roots. Those roots helped make them one of the most important names in Greek extreme metal.

The Tolis Brothers at the Heart of the Band

Brothers Sakis Tolis on vocals and guitar and Themis Tolis on drums have been at the heart of Rotting Christ since the very beginning.

Sakis remains the band’s main creative force, while the bond between the two brothers has been one of the few constants throughout nearly four decades of the band’s history.

The current line-up is completed by Kostas “Spades” Heliotis on bass and Kostis Foukarakis on guitar.
