Katatonia – more than three decades of melancholy
Katatonia was formed in Stockholm in 1991. From their death-doom beginnings, the band developed a layered sound combining progressive metal, alternative rock and gothic atmospheres.
At the centre of their music is the distinctive voice of Jonas Renkse. His vocals are equally powerful during intimate passages and alongside heavy guitar riffs.
Albums such as “Brave Murder Day”, “Viva Emptiness” and “The Great Cold Distance” helped shape the band’s identity. Later releases expanded their musical approach even further.
In 2025, they released their thirteenth studio album, “Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State”, through Napalm Records. Songs such as “Lilac” and “Thrice” showcase their modern sound, driven by guitars and memorable melodies.

Katatonia is a Swedish metal band formed in Stockholm in 1991. Over more than three decades, they have developed one of the most distinctive sounds in European alternative metal.
Their music began within the dark boundaries of death and doom metal. However, the band gradually expanded its style to include progressive rock, gothic atmospheres and shoegaze elements.
At the centre of their sound is the voice of Jonas Renkse. His performances are equally convincing in intimate, fragile passages and alongside powerful guitar riffs.
Throughout their career, Katatonia has built a strong connection with its audience. Their songs frequently explore loneliness, anxiety and inner conflict without offering simple answers or predictable resolutions.
From Death-Doom Roots to a Distinctive Sound
The musical evolution of Katatonia has been marked by significant changes. Their early albums relied on the heaviness of death-doom metal and a bleak atmosphere.
Over time, aggressive elements gave way to clean vocals, layered arrangements and stronger melodies. Nevertheless, melancholy remained present throughout nearly every period of their career.
Today, Katatonia combines metal with progressive rock and alternative influences. Their compositions often develop through subtle dynamic changes rather than straightforward contrasts.
Guitar textures and atmosphere play a particularly important role. They create a space where heaviness and tenderness complement each other instead of competing.
This balance has allowed the band to establish an identity that reaches beyond traditional genre boundaries.
The Albums That Shaped Katatonia
The discography of Katatonia includes numerous albums that have left a lasting mark on the metal scene.
The cult classic “Brave Murder Day” remains one of the defining releases of their early period. Later albums “Last Fair Deal Gone Down” and “Viva Emptiness” demonstrated a growing shift towards alternative sounds.
With “The Great Cold Distance”, Katatonia further established its distinctive musical identity. The songs became more accessible while retaining complex arrangements.
Albums such as “Night Is the New Day” and “Dead End Kings” continued this evolution. The band explored new atmospheres while maintaining its emotional directness.
Later releases “City Burials” and “Sky Void of Stars” demonstrated their ability to change without losing their identity.
Across these different periods, Katatonia has created a discography that listeners return to for its melodies, lyrics and carefully constructed atmosphere.
Katatonia Today – “Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State”
The band’s latest chapter began with its thirteenth studio album, “Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State”. It was released in 2025 through Napalm Records.
This album features a stronger emphasis on guitars. Powerful riffs, unexpected arrangements and memorable melodies shape its musical character.
Guitarists Nico Elgstrand and Sebastian Svalland brought new energy to the band’s sound. Meanwhile, Jonas Renkse continued developing his distinctive vocal style and deeply personal songwriting.
Songs such as “Lilac”, “Thrice” and “The Light Which I Bleed” reveal different sides of the album. They combine heaviness, melancholy and layered guitar arrangements.
Katatonia continues to push its own musical boundaries. Their songs remain equally powerful during quiet moments and intense instrumental passages.
This combination of emotion, atmosphere and heaviness makes Katatonia one of the most distinctive names in contemporary progressive and alternative metal.
