Obscura is a German death metal band founded in 2002 in the Bavarian town of Landshut, and is known for its technically extremely complex and progressive music. Spiritus movens the whole story is guitarist and vocalist Steffen Kummerer, who has remained the only permanent member through the years of numerous lineups. The name of the band was inspired by the Gorguts album of the same name. Obscura made their debut in 2006 with the album Retribution, but gained global attention in 2009 with their second album Cosmogenesis, released on Relapse Records. Their music combines technical death metal with elements of jazz, classical and progressive rock, along with philosophical and sci-fi lyrics. The acclaimed albums Omnivium (2011), Akróasis (2016) and Diluvium (2018) followed, which together form a conceptual tetralogy about the creation and destruction of the universe. Five years ago, they released the album A Valediction, which brings a new line-up and an even more mature, melodic approach. Over the years, Obscura has collaborated with top musicians, including Christian Münzner, Linus Klausenitzer and Hannes Grossmann. Their concerts are known for their technical precision and strong atmosphere, and the band has established itself as one of the leaders in the genre of technical death metal. Obscura remains an active and innovative force on the world metal scene. The band members are Steffen Kummerer (vocals, guitar), Kevin Olasz (guitar), Robin Zielhorst (bass) and James Stewart (drums).
Sadist is an Italian death metal band formed in Genoa in 1991, known for their fusion of technical death metal, progressive elements, and Mediterranean folklore. The band was formed by producer, guitarist, and keyboardist Tommy Talamanca and drummer Peso (also known for his work with Necrodeath). Their 1993 debut album Above the Light quickly gained cult status thanks to its original blend of brutality and atmospherics. Their second album Tribe (1995) further solidified their position on the European metal scene. Sadist has experimented with different styles over the years, including jazz, world music, and progressive rock, making them one of the most diverse bands in the genre. Although they took a hiatus in the early 2000s, they returned in 2005 and continued to release albums such as Sadist (2007), Season in Silence (2010), Hyaena (2015), and Firescorched (2022). Talamanca, as the band’s key creative figure, is known for playing guitar and keyboards simultaneously during concerts. The band has performed all over Europe and shared the stage with big names like Slayer and Sepultura. It can be concluded that they remain one of the longest-running and most innovative bands of the Italian extreme metal scene.
