Who Are 1914?

1914 is a Ukrainian blackened death metal band formed in Lviv in 2014, symbolically marking the centenary of the outbreak of World War I. From the very beginning, the band built a distinctive identity around the Great War, trench warfare, historical events, and the real stories of soldiers.
Combining blackened death metal, doom, and atmospheric elements, 1914 developed a sound unlike almost anything else on the modern extreme metal scene.

World War I as an Endless Source of Inspiration

Unlike most metal bands that use war merely as a backdrop, 1914 bases its music on real historical events, military documents, and the personal stories of soldiers. Their songs explore trench warfare, famous battles, human suffering, and the psychological consequences of war.
This approach has established the band as one of the most original conceptual acts in modern extreme metal. Their music is as atmospheric as it is uncompromisingly heavy.

International Breakthrough with Napalm Records

1914 released its debut album, “Eschatology of War,” in 2015. International recognition came with “The Blind Leading the Blind” in 2018. The album was reissued by Napalm Records a year later, bringing the band to a much wider audience.
Their next album, “Where Fear and Weapons Meet,” arrived in 2021 as their first full-length release for Napalm Records. It further cemented 1914’s reputation as one of Europe’s leading blackened death metal bands.

“Viribus Unitis” Opens a New Chapter

Despite Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the band has continued to write, record, and tour. Today, 1914 stands among the strongest voices of the contemporary Ukrainian metal scene.
Their fourth studio album, “Viribus Unitis,” released in late 2025, offers a more emotional perspective on World War I. It explores themes of unity, survival, and the lasting impact of war on soldiers.
While retaining the band’s signature blend of blackened death metal, doom, and atmospheric passages, the album introduces more melody, orchestral arrangements, and dynamic contrast.
Guest appearances include Aaron Stainthorpe (My Dying Bride, High Parasite), Christopher Scott (Precious Death), and Jérôme Reuter (Rome).

1914’s concerts are renowned for their intense atmosphere and powerful interpretation of wartime themes. The combination of raw energy, authentic historical imagery, and crushing musicianship creates a live experience unlike a conventional metal show.
