Origins and band name
Swans formed in 1982 in New York, led by Michael Gira, a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. Asked why the name Swans, Gira explained it refers to majestic and beautiful creatures with a difficult temperament. From the start, the group refused to follow the rules of the music industry.
Experiments through the decades
For over four decades, Swans have shifted and expanded their sound. They began within the no wave and noise scene, later exploring post-punk and industrial, and eventually moving into post-rock and experimental music. Despite stylistic changes, recurring themes remain: religion, power, sex and death. These subjects define their dark, apocalyptic and hypnotic sound.
Influence and reputation
The influence of Swans is immense. Their aesthetics inspired acts such as Nine Inch Nails and Neurosis. Concerts are renowned for their intensity – loud, lengthy, physically demanding, often described as transformative experiences. Fans frequently say: “Swans are not listened to, Swans are survived.”
Discography and new album
The band has released 16 albums, including highlights like Children of God (1987), The Great Annihilator (1995), and To Be Kind (2014). Their upcoming album “Birthing”, to be released via Mute and Young God Records, confirms that Michael Gira continues to create uncompromising art even after four decades.
Members and current lineup
Alongside Gira, many musicians have contributed over the years. The current lineup features Phil Puleo, Kristof Hahn, Dana Schechter, Christopher Pravdica, Larry Mullins, and Norman Westberg. Together they deliver a wall of sound that transforms live performances into near-ritual experiences.
