Who Are Sólstafir?
Sólstafir are one of Iceland’s most recognizable bands, successfully defying genre boundaries for more than three decades. Formed in Iceland in the mid-1990s, they began their musical journey rooted in raw black metal.
Over the years, they developed a distinctive sound where post-metal, post-rock, psychedelic rock, atmospheric metal and classic rock come together. This combination, along with a strong sense of melancholy and a distinctly Icelandic atmosphere, has helped Sólstafir reach an audience far beyond the metal scene.
The name Sólstafir refers to rays of sunlight breaking through the clouds, an image that almost perfectly captures the contrast between darkness and light that runs throughout their music.
From Icelandic Black Metal to a Sound of Their Own
Sólstafir were formed in 1995, with black metal defining the band’s early years. Their debut album, “Í Blóði og Anda,” was released in 2002, while “Masterpiece of Bitterness” (2005) and “Köld” (2009) saw them increasingly move beyond the boundaries of extreme metal.
They gradually began combining heaviness with psychedelia, atmospheric rock, post-metal and expansive instrumental passages. This evolution resulted in a sound that is now difficult to compare to any other band.
The atmosphere of the Icelandic landscape also became one of the defining characteristics of their music – cold, vast and melancholic, yet deeply emotional.
“Fjara” and “Svartir Sandar” Bring an International Breakthrough
A major breakthrough came in 2011 with the album “Svartir Sandar.” It features “Fjara,” their biggest hit and the song that introduced Sólstafir to a significantly wider audience.
The combination of monumental guitars, melancholy and Aðalbjörn Tryggvason’s emotional vocals demonstrated just how far the band had travelled from their black metal beginnings without losing their heaviness or intensity.
“Fjara” has since become one of Sólstafir’s signature songs and an essential part of their live performances.
“Ótta” Establishes Sólstafir as One of Iceland’s Most Distinctive Bands
Three years after “Svartir Sandar” came “Ótta,” an album that further expanded Sólstafir’s musical world. Piano and strings were incorporated into the arrangements, while atmosphere and emotion moved even further into the foreground.
The album strengthened the band’s international reputation and confirmed that Sólstafir could no longer be simply defined as a metal band.
It was followed by “Berdreyminn” in 2017 and “Endless Twilight of Codependent Love” in 2020, with the band continuing to explore the space between metal, psychedelia, post-rock and classic rock.
“Hin helga kvöl” – A New Chapter for Sólstafir
Their eighth studio album, “Hin helga kvöl,” was released in 2024 and represents the latest chapter in Sólstafir’s career.
Once again, the band combines heaviness, melancholy and monumental rock arrangements with the atmosphere of the Icelandic landscape that has long been one of their defining characteristics.
After more than three decades, Sólstafir remain a band in constant evolution while retaining a strong and unmistakable identity.
Live Shows Between Heaviness, Emotion and Hypnotic Atmosphere
Sólstafir’s concerts are known for their intense atmosphere and dramatic dynamics. Quiet, almost meditative passages can transform within moments into monumental walls of guitars, giving their songs additional power in a live setting.
This contrast is one of the reasons Sólstafir have built a strong international live reputation over the years, performing at clubs and festivals around the world.
Sólstafir currently consist of Aðalbjörn Tryggvason on guitar and vocals, Sæþór Maríus Sæþórsson on guitar, Svavar Austmann on bass, and Hallgrímur Jón Hallgrímsson on drums and backing vocals.
