Early days and debut album
Introducing Mostar Sevdah Reunion is almost unnecessary. It has been more than 25 years since the group, founded by Dragi Šestić, released their first, self-titled album. On it, sevdah songs were presented in a fresh light, and this approach immediately found its audience. Their music was embraced by older lovers of Bosnian blues and new generations looking for a modern twist on traditional arrangements.
Collaborations with legends and discovering new voices
The importance of Mostar Sevdah Reunion is confirmed by collaborations with legends of Balkan music, as well as the discovery of new names. Their second album, “A Gypsy Legend”, was recorded with Šaban Bajramović. With Ljiljana Buttler, they worked on three albums: The Mother Of Gypsy Soul, The Legends Of Life and Frozen Roses. The band also collaborated with Esma Redžepova, while with Milutin Sretenović Sreta they released The Balkan Autumn. As early as 2003, their album A Secret Gate featured then-unknown Amira Medunjanin.
Musicians over the years
Many musicians have been part of Mostar Sevdah Reunion, including Ilijaz Delić, Nedeljko Kovačević and Mustafa Šantić. Each contributed to the band’s unique sound. In recent years, the vocals have been led by Antonija Batinić, who sang all the songs on the album “Lady Sings The Balkan Blues”.
Awards and recognition
The band’s quality was confirmed in 2024 when the prestigious magazine Songlines declared Mostar Sevdah Reunion the best group in the world. This award reinforced their international importance and their role as key ambassadors of sevdah.
New album and concerts
In December, the band will release their new album “Bosa Mara”, offering fresh material and a continuation of their rich musical journey. At concerts, they bridge tradition and modernity, showing that sevdah still has the power to touch audiences worldwide.
