Music as a space for listening

Alice Boyd is a singer-songwriter, sound artist and audio producer based in South London. Her work explores the relationship between people and the natural world. Listening plays a central role in her creative practice. She approaches sound as a way of reconnecting with place and environment.

Her music sits at the intersection of folk-inspired harmonies, ambient electronics and field recordings. The result is a series of intimate and atmospheric soundscapes. These works function not only as songs, but as experiences. They invite the listener to slow down and reconnect with the idea of home and belonging.

Field recording and soundscapes

Field recording is a key element of Alice Boyd’s work. She travels across the United Kingdom, recording sounds from different locations, seasons and ecosystems. These recordings form the foundation of her compositions and installations.

Following an Artist in Residence programme at the Eden Project, Alice and her band performed in botanical gardens, on mountain slopes and in ancient forests. They also appeared in music venues across the UK. Through these performances, she blurs the line between traditional concerts and site-specific sound installations.

Radio, podcasts and public speaking

Alice Boyd is also active in radio and podcast formats. She hosts the monthly podcast Ffern – As the Season Turns. She has appeared as a guest host on BBC Countryfile Magazine – The Plodcast. She has also delivered a TEDx talk focused on listening as a tool for changing perception and our relationship with the environment.

For the Shifting Soundscapes project on BBC Radio 4, Alice followed in the footsteps of legendary field recordist Martyn Stewart. The project documents changes in environmental soundscapes and highlights the importance of attentive listening.

Artistic work and collaborations

Alice Boyd’s music and sound work has been featured on BBC Radio 3, 4 and 6. It has also been presented in venues such as Kings Place, the Barbican Conservatory and the Rainforest Biome at the Eden Project. Alongside her own releases, she creates soundscapes for radio, film, podcasts and installations.

She has collaborated with organisations including the BBC, RSPB, Ffern, Kew’s Wakehurst and EarthPercent. Her work consistently connects sound, ecology and listening as an artistic and environmental practice.
